Very Rare 1953 Pitcairn Island Cover with Postal Form to Cheverly, MD, USA

Description

Very rare 1953 cover with enclosed postal form from the Pitcairn Island Post Office to Cheverly, MD, USA.  The recipient had sent a check in payment of a number of requested stamps from Pitcairn Island (a British territory).  However, as noted on the enclosed postal form, his check was improperly made out to "Secretary to the Governor, Pitcairn Island," but Pitcairn Island had no Governor.  Thus, the check was being returned to him (and his order
left unprocessed) until he could send a new check properly made out to "Secretary to the Governor, Suva, Fiji" (as noted on both sides of the postal form).
The cover is an oversized envelope, which was printed at top "On His Majesty's Service," but "His" was crossed through and replaced with "Her," because Queen Elizabeth II had recently ascended to the throne (crowned June 2, 1953).  It has two cancellations clearly reading August 6, 1953 (Pitcairn Island Post Office), and it is unfranked.  It does have a hand-written notation of "Postmaster" in the lower left corner.  The postal form, dated August 6, 1953, acknowledged receipt of the sender's letter dated June 11, 1953.  This type of form was to be included with requested stamps, and it could either document an order fulfilled or unfulfilled due to insufficient funds (i.e., the case here).  The form was signed by the Pitcairn Island Postmaster.  It is a very unusual and collectible item, given its exotic point of origin.  The cover and form are in nice, clean condition, with just a few wrinkles to the cover and two folds to the form
